COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS ADDRESS VETERANS TRANSPORTATION

The American Red Cross (ARC) found it necessary to end transportation services to all Door County residents effective December 31, 2010.

The County of Door and Door-Tran, through the Door 2 Door Rides taxi service have been able to provide some former riders of the ARC program with reasonable cost transportation in the Sturgeon Bay area.

However, Door County veterans suddenly found themselves without an affordable ride to their appointments at their assigned V.A. medical clinics throughout the region.  To address this issue, discussions began between representatives of Door-Tran, the County of Door, and Ken Rock, County Veterans Service Officer, on options to meet the unique transportation needs of Door County veterans.

Through joint cooperation, creative use of grant funding, and taking advantage of a recently donated (wheelchair accessible) van to the County’s Senior Resource Center, a new Veterans Transportation Program has emerged.  A number of former ARC drivers have volunteered to continue as drivers for this new service.

Effective February 3rd, and every Thursday thereafter throughout 2011, this service will provide low cost rides for Door County veterans to their V.A. medical appointments.   The van will travel to Milwaukee & Cleveland VA Clinics on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and to Green Bay & Appleton Clinics on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.   Door-Tran staff will coordinate the scheduling of volunteer drivers and veterans needing a ride.  For more information, please contact Door-Tran at 743-9999 or toll free at 877-330-6333.
