DOOR 2 DOOR RIDES READY TO ROLL!

The long awaited public transportation system, Door 2 Door Rides, will be up and running on Monday, August 2, 2010, reported Roger Tepe, Director of Door County Social Services and one of the driving forces behind this program.

“We’re excited to see this project come together,” said Tepe.  “There is so much focus on visitors’ needs here in this county, that it is truly a pleasure to see a project of this magnitude come together for the benefit of the residents.”

In 2009, the County of Door collaborated with Door-Tran (Door County Transportation Consortium), a group of concerned agencies and citizens, to develop a shared ride program within the county that will be handicap accessible and affordable for all.  Door-Tran rose to the challenge and along with the County, has developed a public transportation system, named Door 2 Door Rides, which will offer a wider range of transportation options for residents and visitors alike.

The initial service area of Door 2 Door Rides is a 3-mile radius from the center of the city of Sturgeon Bay.  It is the intention of the coordinators of this project to eventually grow the program to include other Door County communities.

The County of Door has contracted with Abby Vans of Neillsville to provide the transportation portion of this project.  Abby Vans has 12 years of experience providing shared ride services to communities.

“We’ve seen first hand the impact that public transportation service for all has on a community,” commented Mark Jones, owner of Abby Vans.  “The availability of a reliable, affordable and accessible shared ride service makes for a healthier and more productive community by allowing those who have limited ability to get from point A to point B.  This makes their lives easier and more enjoyable and as an added benefit, adds to the economic well-being of the businesses they frequent.”

Door 2 Door Rides will start off with 2 brand new handi-cap accessible vans.  Van drivers will have experience and training to assist passengers with special needs – whether they are in wheelchairs or simply students needing a ride to or from an extracurricular activity.

Rates for the shared ride service will be $3.00 per adult ride; with a ½ price fare at $1.50 for seniors, persons with disabilities, or children ages 3-18.   This is a flat fee rate per stop, regardless of distance traveled within the service area.  With Door 2 Door Rides, individuals can arrange a ride within 30 minutes of their call.

Door 2 Door Rides will operate Monday – Friday 6:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. / Saturdays 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 7:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.  No service on holidays is planned at this time.
