About Us:

The impetus for starting the Door County Transportation Consortium began when the Door County Community Foundation instituted its Community Impact Grant program.  The Foundation sent out requests for applications from community nonprofits, seeking projects which would have a significant and positive impact on those who live in and visit Door County.  The projects were to be beyond the usual scope of the applying nonprofit, collaborative with other community organizations, be creative, and cross disciplinary.

The United Way of Door County answered the call.  Their needs assessments of 1998 and 2005, and focus groups formed in 2006 all agreed that the improvement of transportation services was a significant need in Door County.  A transportation steering committee made up of nonprofits, for-profits, and government agencies was formed and later became the Door County Transportation Consortium. The first task was to form a communication and coordination center to fill transportation needs with the help of current services in the area.  Surveys have been taken and unmet needs are being evaluated to better ensure those needs will be met in the future.  Based on tracked unmet needs, affordability has often appeared as a barrier. Two programs have been started to help reduce transportation costs. A car pool matching service began in November 2008 along with half-price transportation vouchers.  You can learn more about these programs by clicking on the tabs above.

Under the direction of the steering committee, the Door County Transportation Consortium started towards its goal.  Its task was to form a communication and coordination center to fill transportation needs with the help of current services in the area.  Surveys have been taken and unmet needs are being evaluated to better ensure those needs will be met in the future.  Over 43 members have signed on.  The membership is made up of nonprofit providers, for-profit providers, nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies.  The Consortium continues to gather information in order to design and implement a self-sustaining accessible and affordable transportation system for Door County.
